THINGS I WISH I'D KNOWN WHEN I STARTED TEACHING PHYSICS

Those of us with Physics degrees are often at a disadvantage to our colleagues with Engineering degrees here. In particular, it took me some time to become really familiar with some of the terminology used, like strong, stiff, brittle, malleable, hard and so on. Eventually, I decided to write a definitions sheet for my pupils which, to be honest, I mainly did to help my own understanding. I ran it past a number of people, including University lecturers in the subject and the author of a textbook on it. I was surprised, but heartened from my own point of view, to find that not all of them agreed entirely with each other! Eventually, this is what I had:
